After a restricted competition between selected architects BesixRed entrusted STDM with the renovation of this office building marking the Place de la Gare in Luxembourg City.
The aim was to meet all the challenges in terms of energy and functional renovation of the building, but also, due to its central position on the square, to treat the issue of the façade with the greatest care.
The stone treated in a contemporary way in large panels is in dialogue with the neighbouring historic buildings and the central station. The details of the openings are studied with care and particular precision in order to optimise the gains in natural light compared to an existing unchangeable concrete framework. The essential solar protections of this south-facing façade are protected from the wind by a double sheet of glass that contributes to the abstraction of the composition. The combination of this glass with dark emalit flush panels makes it possible to refine the stone bands by giving depth to the composition.
At nightfall, LED lighting integrated into the window sills delicately highlights the stone edge of the frames so that the façade participates in the enhancement of all the buildings on the square.
